Mary Coughlan is one of the finest singers to emerge from Galway and is widely regarded as Ireland’s finest jazz and blues vocalist. In this welcome return to the Town Hall Theatre, Mary will play all her trademark songs including The Double Cross, Ancient Rain, The Magdalen Laundry and Delaney’s Gone Back on the Wine and her recent cover of the Joy Division song Love Will Tear Us Apart.
The vocal marrying of sardonic wit, visceral rage, orgiastic between-the-sheets passion, the tenderest of sorrowful regrets - this is Mary’s talent. Regardless of the elements she chooses to manipulate with flawless ease, Mary’s voice has always been an unforeseen, sudden seduction.
“Her latest album is as humorous as it is harrowing, flitting seamlessly from tender ballads to big-band swing, vaudeville and pop.” Sunday Times
“Coughlan delivers a shamelessly grown-up album, a consummate talent at the top of her game.” - Sunday Business Post
“Life Stories delivered a work that confronts life in the round and in the raw rather than offering fake panaceas. These days, we need her more than ever.” - Hotpress 8.5 / 10
“Truthful and tenderhearted without sentimentality” - Irish Times ★★★★
