Yet he keeps challenging himself, because he's physically challenged and emotionally unavailable. Described by San Francisco Weekly (free press, run by lesbians and trannys with large hands) as "stand-up in the very best possible sense - deadpan, ever-alert and hilarious", Scott has appeared in Mrs. Doubtfire, where, effortlessly, he played a homosexual; and Star Wars; Phantom Menace, where, breathlessly, he wore rubber.

Sharon Mannion - Finalist in the 2007 UK & Ireland Funny Woman competition & Winner of Galway Comedy Festival Stand Up Showdown 2008

So you want to be a comedian... Robbie Bonham tells you the Dos and Don'ts of getting into performing comedy,
- 19 Sep 2008
This may sound like I'm up my own 'thoin', but bear with me. Thought I'd (finally) throw in my two cent(s) on what are the Dos and Don'ts of getting into performing comedy, as there are a large number of young comics that post here regularly. Here's the ten biggies!
1. THE most important one, and I know it's obvious, but only do your OWN material (or something someone has written for you). Do NOT do other comedians' material. Obvious to most of us, but you'd be surprised how many people not only use established comedians' material, but have NO IDEA that that's not acceptable. There is no room for 'cover bands' in comedy. I have actually heard open spots say they're trying to work in some of their OWN material into their sets. WTF?
2. Time-keeping. NEVER do more than told to by the MC / Promotor. If you're told 7 minutes, do 7 minutes. 6 and a half is even better. Its not about how funny you might be. MCs have a schedule to keep and any over-running usually cuts into the last comic's time. There's nothing worse than a brash open spot who thinks he's hilarious (he may even be) so goes on to do 12. You probably won't get asked back again. Also (and this is true for comedians of every level) if you get a HUGE laugh (like with applause etc) a minute from the end, go out on that! It's very hard to top a major laugh with one minute to go!
3. DON'T try for gigs you're not skilled enough to do yet (such as, for example, the Comedy Store). You'll only make it harder to get back in if you're not good enough yet.Stick with pub clubs that actively encourage open spots. If you're serious about doing comedy, you'll get a chance one day, when you're ready. For instance, if you're still doing gigs thinking 'I hope to God there's no hecklers tonight', you're not ready to do big venues / corporate entertainment, etc.
4. Always carry a notebook. You never know when something funny might occur to you (usually happens to me on the bus to a gig, whilst gazing out the window).
5. Dont try to do a new set every gig. Get a good backbone to your set, and add or take from it over time. Chances are no punters will see you more than twice in the first year or two anyway (apart from regulars, but there's not many of them).
6. Start on a strong joke (the quicker to the punchline, the better) and end on a strong joke. There's nothing worse than a new comedian spending 5 minutes to get to the first punchline (however good it may be). The audience will get bored quickly unless they have a couple of immediate laughs to kick off! Put your looser material in the middle.
7. What to write about: I'm sure we all have philosophical or political stuff we want to talk about, but again, you have to wait til you have the confidence to make it funny. If you look 12, or are nervous, the audience are not gonna buy your 'hardened look at life', because you don't look like you 'walk the walk'. Stick to everyday, easily identifiable observation about general life, and stay the hell away from 'paedo' jokes unless you're already a known comedian (or are an unusually talented newbie, but that's rare). You have to know how to get an audience to like you, or how to 'disarm' any hostilities, before trying risque stuff. It's not about getting your point across on subjects, it's about making people laugh. Promotors dont want someone who's 'clever'. They want someone who makes a room laugh almost constantly. There are actually open spots who send dvd recordings of themselves DYING on stage for 15 minutes straight, because they think "well this audience didnt get me, but the promotor watching this will". He won't watch more than 30 seconds without a laugh in it.
8. Don't bring any assholes to your gigs. By assholes, I mean people who will not have the decency to stay quiet for the other comedians sets. This will reflect badly on you, and make it harder to get a return slot. Make sure any friends know the etiquette of the particular club you're playing. Also, don't be an asshole audient yourself.
9. If a performance you did six months ago looks squirmingly awful in retrospect, you're probably doing things right (especially if you can acknowledge it's not as good as you thought at the time). It means you're getting better. As good as any of us think we are, there's ALWAYS room for improvement. I'm doing it 5 years, and I squirm at stuff I did 6 months ago. Same with artwork I do. The better you get, the worse your early stuff will look.
10. I'm not one for taking (or giving) advice (well... apart from this post) but I'd suggest only take advice from those who are doing well. It's as true in comedy as it is in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings...lol... Some people think they know what they're talking about, but if they're struggling themselves, they can't know that much, can they? I may not even know what I'm talking about, for all I know. This list is basically just me commenting on some very obvious things I've seen over the last 5 years. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I've some experience. I have no idea what I'M doing most of the time, just doing what feels natural. And by those 'doing well', I mean those who are well received by audience, promotors and other comedians alike. Not those who are 'in with the right people' for largely business purposes.

Six brave performers will arrive with no script and not the faintest idea of what will happen. Willed on by a supportive crowd, through improvisation they create whole sketches and comic dramas that are amazingly inventive and sometimes take off into flights of surreal brilliance.
The TV show of the same name, "Whose Line Is it Anyway?" is a pale imitation when compared to this live show.
Featuring some of the most popular characters from the English TV series - The live show follows the same format as the TV show as seen on Channel 4 (currently on Dave Channel on SKY ) with loads of audience participation and madcap improvised Comedy sketches. The format is simple. The comedians improvise a full night of comedy based on audience suggestion. It is comedy without a safety net, it is guerrilla theatre and it is very very funny.
A little bit about the guys....
Stephen Frost stands 6 feet 5 inches in his socks and possesses the bushiest black eyebrows in Christendom. He’s very loud and very funny especially when things go very wrong.
Stephen is best known for his work in the 1980s with Mark Arden as part of the double act, The Oblivion Boys on Saturday Live. He appeared in a series of British TV advertisements ending with the catchphrase "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label".
A veteran of the alternative comedy scene, Stephen appeared regularly in The Young Ones and he has appeared many times the improvisation show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?". He has also appeared on a few episodes of "Have I Got News For You" and on "Never Mind The Buzzcocks". He enjoyed two small "Blackadder" roles and had a cameo in the British comedy series "Mr. Bean", starring Rowan Atkinson.
In 2003 he appeared in Guy Masterson's sell-out production of "12 Angry Men" alongside Bill Bailey.
Richard Vranch improvises comedy on stage with the Comedy Store Players (with Paul Merton & Josie Lawrence) every Wednesday and Sunday at The Comedy Store in London. He has performed since 1979, and formed a comedy double-act with Tony Slattery in 1981. The duo hosted the Channel 4 quiz "The Music Game" and over 100 episodes of "Cue The Music" on ITV. He was the improvising pianist and guitarist on the original British television show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" appearing in 87 episodes between 1988 & 1997. Having said all that only a small proportion of his overall work is musical and Richard is also a very funny inprovisor. This year he performed in Edinburgh with "Paul Merton's Impro Chums"
Steve Steen has been performing pretty much everywhere since 1972. He’s appeared in every funny programme you’ve heard of including Blackadder, Fry and Laurie, Have I got news for you, Whose Line is it anyway and …The Bill.
It was inevitable that a man like Steve would spend a spell in prison, and in 1979 he was duly banged up in 'Porridge' the film spin-off from the tv series. Upon his release he promised to mend his ways and went to Berlin to perform in the celebration of a 100 years of German culture where he was banned and almost booted out of the country.
Channel four started up and their first home grown comedy series was 'Little Armadillos' starring Steve and his mate Jim Sweeney
You name it he's done it, The Kenny Everett Show', `Carrott Confidential`, Saturday Night Live', 'Russell Harty's Christmas Party', 'Wogan', 'Blackadder the Third', 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie', 'Red Dwarf', 'The Staggering Stories of Ferdinand de Bargos', 'Spitting Image', 'Clive Anderson Talks Back', 'Have I Got News For You', 'Whose Line Is It Anyway', 'The Bill', 'The Lenny Henry Show', 'The Rory Bremner Show', 'The Good Sex Guide', 'Crapston Villas', 'Jo Brand Through the Cakehole', 'The Paul Merton Show', etc, etc, blah blah blah…
Andy Smart has performed at 28 consecutive Edinburgh Festivals including the all comedian version of 12 Angry Men which also went on to tour Australia and New Zealand. He has also performed in Edinburgh with "Paul Merton's Impro Chums" This year he organised the 1st annual poker tournament for comics. Andy has a predilection for extreme danger and has run with the bulls in Pamplona 49 times – so far
Andy has been performing as a guest with the Comedy Store Players for 13 years and became a permanent member in 1995.
As a member of the "Steve Frost Impro All Stars" Andy has toured Ireland several times as well as performing in: Edinburgh at the Festival, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shang-Hai, Tokyo, Bangkok, Manilla, Taiwan, Singapore, New York, Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Antibes, Paris, Wellington, Adelaide, Perth WA, and Prague.
Special guests on the night include Ian Coppinger (Dublin Comedy Improv) & Phill Jupitus (Never mind the buzzcocks)
Ian Coppinger is the finest improvisational talent Ireland has produced. A founding member of The Comedy Improv (1992) where he still performs every Monday night at the International Bar in Dublin, Ian has since accepted invitations to improvise with the popular Second City from Chicago, Whose Line Is It Anyway, The Comedy Store Players and Theatresports. Hot Press described him as ‘pound for pound the funniest human being to have existed anywhere ever’. He is way funnier than all these English improvisers and standing 5 feet tall he looks quite funny beside Stephen Frost.
Phill Jupitus is a comedian highly rated by his peers, he has a massive live following and is at his best off the cuff. Using the moniker 'Porky the Poet', he started out as a performance poet and he toured supporting bands such as Billy Bragg, The Style Council and The Housemartins.
He is now a multi-talented performer appearing regularly on Whose line is it anyway?, QI with Stephen Fry and is a team captain on ‘Never mind the Buzzcocks’
Add to that, directing music videos for the likes of Billy Bragg and also produced the music video for Kirsty MacColl's 1991 single release "All I Ever Wanted" along with DJing regularly both on the radio and at clubs and festivals, Phill is a noted fan of alternative music styles. He also performed with The Blockheads (and has done so sporadically over the last few years since Ian Dury's death) on their 30th anniversary tour in 2007.
Phill recently presented some of the BBC's television coverage of music events, such as the Glastonbury Festival and is a noted Arachnaphobe.

Doug Stanhope confirmed for September Laughter Lounge
- 15 Jul 2008
Doug is probably best known in Ireland for his 2006 appearance at the Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival where he told his lairy, late-night crowd, that Irish men sleep with children, because - as the headline to the following day's Irish Daily Star put it (misreportedly) - "Irish women are too ugly to rape! Comic booed after shocking festival jibe." The Star getting it all wrong, imagine.
Stanhope has been described as a free-thinking nihilist, a vulgar miseriblist, a self-indulgent, drunken washout and a deviant, misanthropic Charles Kuralt. His material ranges from true-life graphic perversion to volatile social criticism. He's also a bit of a boozehound.
One of the greatest stand-ups alive, Stanhope, just announced one Edinburgh gig this year. It's almost worth stumping up the £7,349 to be his one-man audience for a one-off performance - a bloody-minded protest against the commercialisation of comedy. Of course you could just pay €20 to see him in Roisin Dubh on Wednesday 3rd September.

Recently attacked onstage in the Comedy Store, Manchester, Jim is regarded as one of the fastest rising stars in the comedy world. Definitely not for the prudish.

Comedy Comedy - so good we named it twice
- 19 May 2008
Comedy Comedy May 24th Upstairs at the Roisin Dubh
Comedy Comedy is a new monthly night of stand up – you’ve guessed it- comedy. It begins this Saturday 24th May upstairs in the Roisin Dubh. Comedy Comedy will be hosted by local comedian John Donnellan and headlined by Jarlath Regan.
Doors open at 8.00pm the show begins at 8.30 and finishes by 9.45. Admission is 10 Euro.
Local Comic John Donnellan says ‘I know a lot of people who would love to see some live comedy. Unfortunately the three comedy clubs in town are on school nights. Comedy Comedy is a chance for people to take in some of the best comedians around on a Saturday night and still go out out afterwards. There’s some tremendous comedic talent in the country at the moment and we’ve booked one of the very best for the opening night. Jarlath is not just funny, he’s clever funny and occasionally silly funny. At the risk of repeating myself I suppose he’s just funny funny. I’m pretty jealous actually because at the moment, I’m just funny’.
John has been performing for just over a year but has made quite a name for himself already. He was a semi-finalist at the Edinburgh ‘So you think you’re funny’ competition last year and recently won the ‘Stand up showdown’ competition at the Galway Comedy Festival. The Evening Herald said ‘John Donnellan just gets funnier every time I see him’.
Jarlath Regan has been described as ‘Comic Genius’ by the Irish Times and ‘The best Irish comedian you’ve never heard of’ by the Dubliner magazine. He is about to become somewhat better known; his TV show ‘Nobody knows Jarlath Regan’ begins on TV3 shortly. Jarlath mixes razor sharp observations with real style, presence and timing. He is laid back but relentlessly funny. You will love him.

 April at the Laughter Lounge
- 30 Mar 2008
Well the comedy festival has come and gone but the business of supplying weekly laughs goes on and on. As April rolls around we are delighted to welcome some of the world’s top acts to our little house of fun. Scottish comedy legend Parrot returns on 2nd with a very special guest, Mr. Russell Kane. Russell is fast making a name for himself in the UK. See him now before he’s too big and you can’t afford the ticket price.
Our good friend Paddy Courtney will be performing his first Vicar street headline show on Saturday 12th April. This show promises to be very special, see it 3 days early and for half the price on Wednesday 9th.
If you thought the Stewart Lee gig was special in February, then you’ll be delighted to hear that his old comedic partner Richard Herring will be with us on Wed 16th.
Our monthly resident MC Karl Spain is with us on 23rd. Karl is joined by 2 shining lights of the UK circuit in Jack Whitehall – recently nominated for the Chortle best newcomer award amongst other things and “the jester from hell” Jason Rouse – actually from Canada.
We round the month out nicely on 30th with if.comedy nominated Andrew Lawrence – (beaten only by Brendon Burns), with Scotland’s best new act Kevin Bridges.
So all in all a fine month with, hopefully, something for everyone. And if not perhaps the Dave Gorman (the Googlewhack guy) book launch as part of Cuirt on Sunday 27th would interest you.

The Laughter Lounge presents
Kevin McAleer - Back in the late Eighties, the undoubted highlight of late night RTÉ television was Kevin McAleer’s appearances on 'Nighthawks'. Kevin is one of the originators of modern Irish stand-up comedy and could quite rightly be proclaimed a comic genius but we like to focus on the fact that he is still funny, very funny indeed. He returns with the very latest version of his one-man show. It's a parallel world of delusions, hallucinations and pure comic nonsense, where the English language struggles to cope before collapsing in hysterical laughter. Kevin has a unique brand of slow paced but achingly funny stand-up routines. His sense of humour is obscure to say the least, but his intelligent and oft-times whimsical comedy is matched by superb timing which will leave you in danger of wetting your seat! A farmer by choice, Kevin has also written a number of books and essays and is a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines in Northern Ireland. His take on the life and lifestyles of yesteryear, when compared with the frantic pace of modern living, has a deep resonance and is a mountain of hilarious comparisons.
Michael Mee - "Woody Allen with a Cork brogue". Time Out, New York
Paddy Courtney - Star of TG4's hit new show "Paddywackery" and most likely the finest MC in the country. “Paddy Courtney is a high velocity wit who lives life just a side step away from normality” -The Scotsman

“Irelands latest Comedy Star” Examiner
Open spot from Matthew Collins
Followed by DJ Monty until late
In a change from our previously advertised show, we are delighted to announce that David McSavage has agreed to appear in the place of Matt Kirshen.
David McSavage is a guitar strumming comedy genius, and that’s official. The comic equivalent of dynamite fishing, his school bully routine insults one and all. The blistering invective is accompanied by an angry, embittered Irishman shtick, as he tells us why life is shit, lays into various nationalities and sings songs about screwing pigeons. But as controversial as he is, there is no bias or discrimination in his act. He hates everyone!
Dave is most definitely NOT for the prudish, and many people won’t stomach his random, vicious blasts at the entire world. But for most, what he offers is damn funny as well as unique. Come along and see him if you dare but be prepared to be enjoyably abused.

September at Galway's favourite comedy club.
- 30 Aug 2007
Top Irish & international stand up comedians & improv shows , Wednesdays at Roisin Dubh, Dominick street, Galway.
www.roisindubh.net
This month at the Lounge we'll be featuring some of Canada's finest stand up comedians.
Wednesday 12th sees the visit of Pete Johansson (Vancouver) who I saw in the comedy store a few weeks ago and he was awesomely funny, irreverent, brilliant, and smooth like fine jazz. And all that while talking about happy endings in an Indonesian massage parlour. Also from the premier league of comics we have the quirky absurdity of Kevin Gildea & everyone's favourite hobbit, Colum McDonnell.
Wednesday 19th features another Canadian master, Stewart Francis (Toronto). Stewart was a huge hit at this years Cat Laughs festival and is a regular guest on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. The king of the one liners, Stewart has been described by the guardian as "A brilliant comic brain…..this stand-up cracks some of the best one-liners I've ever heard". Support from Geoff Norcott (UK) with a storming mix of impressions, observations, satire and rap & guest MC Ian Coppinger
Wednesday 26th its the return of "The truly stunning Tom Stade" (British Columbia) . His superbly perceptive observations of the world we live in are gifted in their conception and exquisitely funny in their execution. Support from Scottish new comer Kevin Bridges & from RTE's "I Dare Ya", Andrew Stanley.
There's an online offer for all shows: Only € 7.50 for members until midnight on the Tuesday night before the show.
